BMI = Body Mass Index
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a value calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters:BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]². BMI is commonly used to assess whether an adult's body weight is within a healthy range.
Limitations of BMI
- BMI reflects overall body weight but cannot distinguish between fat and non-fat mass (such as muscle and organs).
- Individuals with the same BMI may have different body fat percentages.
- BMI is a statistical indicator of nutritional status and is not a direct measure of body fat or fat distribution.
- BMI does not indicate whether fat is distributed in the abdomen or limbs. Abdominal fat is more closely associated with increased risks of heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes.
